A Cleaner, Safer Workshop: The Health and Safety Benefits of MQL Systems

In modern manufacturing, worker safety and environmental responsibility are not just regulatory requirements—they are cornerstones of a successful and sustainable operation. While traditional flood coolant systems have long been the standard, their inherent mess and potential health risks are driving a shift toward cleaner, more efficient alternatives. Minimal Quantity Lubrication (MQL) systems are at the forefront of this change, creating a safer, healthier workplace by directly addressing the common hazards associated with conventional machining fluids.  

Eliminating Airborne Contaminants and Respiratory Risks

One of the most significant safety advantages of MQL is the dramatic reduction of airborne contaminants. Flood coolant systems apply a constant, high-volume stream of liquid, which creates a fine mist or aerosol as it interacts with high-speed cutting tools. This mist can become a major source of air pollution in the factory, carrying microscopic particles of metalworking fluid into the breathing zone of machine operators.  

Prolonged exposure to these airborne mists has been linked to a range of respiratory issues, including asthma, bronchitis, and other lung diseases. MQL, on the other hand, uses a finely atomized spray of lubricant and compressed air, applied in minimal quantities directly to the cutting point. This precision delivery eliminates the need for large volumes of fluid, drastically reducing the formation of a coolant mist and keeping the factory air cleaner and safer to breathe.  

Reducing Slip Hazards and Improving Floor Safety

Flood coolant is, by its very nature, messy. Despite protective guards and containment measures, it inevitably leaks onto the factory floor, creating dangerous slip hazards. A single slip-and-fall accident can lead to serious injuries, lost work time, and costly insurance claims.  

MQL’s “near-dry” machining process leaves little to no residual fluid on the workpiece, machine, or surrounding floor. The lubricant is almost entirely consumed in the cutting process, vaporizing at the tool-chip interface. This means dry machines, dry parts, and most importantly, dry and safe factory floors. The elimination of these wet, slick surfaces significantly reduces the risk of workplace accidents, contributing to a more secure environment for everyone.  

Protecting Skin and Preventing Health Issues

Beyond respiratory and slip hazards, traditional coolants can also pose a threat to skin health. Constant contact with metalworking fluids can cause a variety of skin irritations, including dermatitis and other rashes. These fluids can also become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, leading to infections and a foul odor in the workshop.  

MQL systems use high-quality, often biodegradable and plant-based, lubricants that are less hazardous to human skin. Because the lubricant is applied in such small amounts and is contained to the cutting area, there is minimal to no skin contact. This reduces the risk of skin irritation and eliminates the need for biocide additives to prevent bacterial growth, creating a much healthier environment for machine operators.

By moving to an MQL system, companies are not just adopting a more efficient and cost-effective lubrication method; they are making a proactive choice to prioritize the health and safety of their workforce. The reduction of overspray, airborne mist, and liquid on the factory floor translates directly to a cleaner, more pleasant, and far safer working environment.
